Course Description
SLA 448S offers a general survey of Ukrainian literature in the seventeenth
and eighteenth century. Among the topics covered are: polemical literature, school drama,
folk literature, historical chronicles, and a variety of genres of poetry. The course is
designed as an elementary introduction to this literature. All reading is done in modern
Ukrainian or in English translations. The amount of reading is reduced to a minimum to
maximize student involvement with the texts and participation in class discussions.

Term papers are due in class on the next-to-last class (April 4, 2002).
Late papers will be penalized at the instructor's discretion.
No paper will be accepted after the last day of classes in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences.
Papers are to be 12-15 pages, typed, double spaced, and in English.
Papers are to be written on topics approved by the instructor.
