Call for Submissions

Attention translators!

This is a call for submissions to Ukrainian Literature: A Journal of Translations. The journal is an ongoing publication, appearing at intervals of three (or more) years dedicated to presenting works of Ukrainian literature in English translation. Every issue appears in both an Internet and in a print edition. Ukrainian Literature is published by the Shevchenko Scientific Society of Canada, 516 The Kingsway, Toronto, ON M9A 3W6 Canada. It is edited by Maxim Tarnawsky who works with the assistance of Uliana Pasicznyk.

We invite translators to submit their works for publication in our next issue, Volume 7, which is to appear in late 2025 or early 2026. To be considered for inclusion, translations must be submitted before September 1, 2025.

Submissions will be evaluated by the editor. Translators and authors of accepted submissions will be paid CAD$ 30 per page of translation after the issue of the Journal has been published.

Submissions must be previously unpublished original translations, preferably of works that have not been previously translated. Translators are encouraged to discuss their submissions with the editor before submitting. Submissions must be made in electronic form using standard formats (MS Word is preferred).

Translations of any work of Ukrainian literature will be considered but translators are particularly encouraged to choose works of prose. Submissions should be translations of entire works, or at least very substantial portions (not excerpts) of long works. Translations of particularly lengthy works can be serialized in the publication. Translators are encouraged to ensure that translation rights for the work in question are available before submitting. If needed, the editor will assist in doing so. Once a submission is accepted, the editor will negotiate translation rights with authors or rights-holders.

Submissions should always include complete bibliographic information about the original Ukrainian work that has been translated.

Submissions, inquiries, and all other correspondence regarding Ukrainian Literature should be sent by email to the journal's editor, Maxim Tarnawsky at maxim.tarnawsky@utoronto.ca. The editor can also be reached by regular mail:

Additional information for translators.

Translators will retain all rights to re-publish their work elsewhere. Ukrainian Literature will be purchasing one-time-only rights to an internet and a print edition. A number of translations that have appeared in the journal have subsequently been republished in other publications or as separate books, giving translators and authors a second round of royalties and exposure.

Please use minimal formatting in your submission. Do not change fonts or font size unless the original text requires special typographic treatment.

Before choosing a work for translation, please check if a previous translation of this work already exists. A bibliography of Ukrainian literary translations by Marta Tarnawsky, entitled Ukrainian Literature in English was published as four research reports by the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies Press; further installments appeared in journals. The entire bibliography is available online, at the links below. Please note, you must check in all the separate sections of the bibliography (pre-65 books, pre-65 articles, 1980-90, 1965-1979, and 2000- ) separately. The sections are not cross-indexed.
