Fall Term Papers

Fall term papers are due Wednesday, December 2, 2009 (the last class before winter vacation). Papers are to be 8–12 pages, typed, double spaced, and in English. Papers may be written on any topic after consulting with the instructor. Papers can be written on the topics listed below without consulting the instructor. These topics can also serve as a guide in formulating your own topic.

1. Compare the descriptive and narrative techniques of Panteleimon Kulish, Panas Myrnyi, and Ivan Nechui-Levyts'kyi. Examine in detail with examples how each of these writers accomplishes specific tasks, e.g. describing a landscape, person or object; providing narrative explanations for a character’s motivation, etc.

2. Compare the depiction of intellectual questions in the novels of Ivan Nechui-Levyts'kyi and Ol'ha Kobylians'ka. What methods and tools do they use to convey to the reader the substance of their characters’ thinking. How complex are the intellectual questions these characters contemplate?

3. Compare the depiction of lower classes in Ivan Franko and Panas Myrnyi.

4. Compare the depiction of “women’s issues” in Mykhailo Iatskiv and Ol'ha Kobylians'ka.
