Assignment 2

Assignment 2 is due on March 16, 2016.

The Assignment is to write a short essay of 600–900 words (2–3 pages) analyzing the song and performance of the Ukrainian entry in the Eurovision Song Contest for 2007. Verka Serduchka - Dancing Lasha Tumbai. View it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DIPUHbpECZE.

You may want to read more about Verka Serduchka on the internet: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Verka_Serduchka, and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dancing_Lasha_Tumbai.

Use all the concepts and analytical tools you have developed in this course (and elsewhere) to analyze what this performance and the controversy around it say about culture in Ukraine. There are very many perspectives to consider, you needn't get to all of them. But do bear in mind that the Eurovision Contest is a somewhat unusual forum where non-traditional material is very common. It's also a competition where artists vie to win by appealing to viewers from other countries.
