Assignment 2

Assignment 2 is due at the beginning of class in week 10, March 17, 2020.

You must turn it in online, through Quercus.

https://q.utoronto.ca/courses/136627/assignments/306130

You must write a brief essay of 2 pages, no less than 600 words. Essays should be formatted with 1 inch margins, double spacing, and 12 point type. There is no need of a title page. References, if you use them, don't need a separate page, they can go at the bottom of your essay.
Write clearly. Choose the right words, shape your ideas into meaningful sentences, and structure your argument into cohesive paragraphs. Make sure you say EXACTLY what you mean, not something almost similar to what you thought you might like to say. Be brief and get to your point directly, without lengthy introductions or digressions. Express your insights. Demonstrate that you have given some consideration to the ideas you are expressing and that you understand how these ideas relate to other ways of looking at the topic.

The specific assignment is this:
Read Joseph Roth's “The Bust of the Emperor” which is available in quercus: https://q.utoronto.ca/courses/136627/files?preview=6406192

Write a short essay exploring the place that Roth is writing about, i.e. Galicia. What kind of place is the Galicia he describes? What are it's characteristic features? How do the characters in the story understand it?
